Prunell
Charley is an enrolled member of the Dine’ (Navajo)
Nation. Prunell lives in the community of the
Jedditio Chapter near Keams Canyon, AZ. He was born
in Keams Canyon and has resided there or near this
land ever since he could remember. In the early
days, he remembers, the land was rich in soil and
moisture and the harvests were plentiful, including
grasses. Through his youth, his grandparents always
had livestock like sheep, horses and later cattle.
Ultimately cattle became the main agricultural
product, but diminished after degradation of land
from drought, increase in population and lowered
management responsibilities of land and livestock.
With a wonderful beginning in agriculture, Prunell
took up the interest and began looking at possibly
getting into an agricultural related field of study.
After a couple of years at Central Arizona College,
Prunell transferred to the University of Arizona
where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Animal Sciences in 1993. Thereafter, he found
employment with the Navajo Nation under the
Department of Agriculture. After a year and half, he
decided to pursue another degree, this time in
Agricultural Education.
In 1999, Prunell graduated from the University of
Arizona with a Master’s in Agricultural Education.
This educational experience has been the most
beneficial for him since he developed an interest in
teaching. Through hard work, Prunell is certifiable
to teach high school agriculture or science. After
all the education, he still wanted to learn, so he
finished a Horseshoe ing School Program in Purcell,
OK.
After that, he finally began his career with
Cooperative Extension under the University of
Arizona. For over three years, Cooperative Extension
was a place where he was employed until May 2003, at
which time he decided to pursue a dream in owning a
business. The self employment segment (farrier) of
the business evolved, but the small business
(retail) did not develop like intended. Several
barriers were identified which caused this business
endeavor to fail. As a liaison for NTDA, Navajo
Nation Office, Prunell will do his best to deliver
the best opportunities for the Indian People based
on experiences.
The American Indian way of life, wanting to be
somebody, life experiences and good intentions have
led Prunell this far along. Life is full of
challenges, there is but one more goal he believes
that he might be able to accomplish in this life, he
will keep you all posted on this childhood goal; for
now, he has decided to commit and assist the people
who want to pursue their goals and dreams.
